Summary
What is Journey by Mediavine?
Some brands are willing to pay to display ads on websites. Even if they don’t know you.
There are companies called advertising networks that connect brands with your site. By using the services of such a network, you earn money by displaying ads for different brands on your site’s pages.
You don’t manage the relationship with the brands, you have nothing to do except receive the money once a month.
There are hundreds of advertising networks, and Journey by Mediavine is one of them. It is offered by a company in the United States but is accessible regardless of where you live.
To be able to use Journey’s services, you must have:
- a site with at least 10,000 monthly sessions. Approximately 12,000 monthly page views, regardless of the country of origin of your visitors;
- Grow plugin on your site for at least one month.
I decided to use Journey on my second site, which receives approximately 30,000 sessions per month.
What were my blog earnings before with Adsense?
I started using Journey on my blog observatoire-hyperhidrose.fr in June 2024. My previous advertising network was Google AdSense.
Here are my earnings with AdSense over the last 12 months before using Journey.
RPM was an average of €3.11.
This means that during this period, I earned an average of €3.11 for every 1,000 visits to my site.
The RPM varies depending on the time of year and the days, as shown in the graph below:
My earnings with Journey
Here are the earnings my site generated during its first month with Journey:
Monthly Earnings: $77
RPM: $3,58
Page views: 27,937
And here are the earnings that Google AdSense generated for me during the same period last month.
The interesting data here is the RPM, not the earnings, as the earnings depend on the traffic, which has increased on my site this year compared to last year.
Monthly Earnings: $54
RPM: $3,54
Page views: 15,409
My RPM is equivalent with Journey and AdSense for now.
However:
- Fewer ads are displayed with Journey, making the experience more pleasant for my visitors, which I appreciate.
- It is possible that the RPM will improve, as it sometimes takes several weeks for the network’s algorithms to “understand” our site and improve the generated revenue.
⚠️ The display of advertisements is not my only source of income for this site. I also monetize it by selling an ebook and using affiliate marketing, primarily through Amazon.
Edit (17 November 2024): my October’RPM is $5.88.
Conclusion: Should you adopt Journey?
For now, Journey does not earn me more than AdSense. However, I hope that over time, the revenue will improve.
I think it makes sense to switch to Journey as soon as you reach the traffic threshold. This allows you to test and benefit from Mediavine’s expertise, which is known to be a great company serving “small” publishers.
You can always switch back to Google AdSense if you are not satisfied!
And of course, as soon as you reach 50k sessions per month with US-Canada traffic, it is more beneficial to switch to Mediavine, the premium network.
